Shipping Hedgehogs

Apr 11, 2014 by

Thank you for your interest in shipping our babies!!  We have several options available and we will do our best to help you have a positive shipping experience.  Shipping arrangements take quite some time and we require that individual hedgehog selections are made within two weeks of the shipping date.   There will be a $20.00 boarding fee per week for hedgehogs that are reserved and not transported within the two week time frame.  We believe it is important for baby hedgehogs to go to a new home as soon as possible.  There will be no substitutions or changes after the two week limit.  We only ship Premier Plan hedgehogs via airline because this plan offers the benefits required for the detailed process.   United Airline Pet Safe Program For the most cost effective shipping for both you, and us we need to ship at least six hedgehogs via airline on the same day. The total number of hedgehogs shipped in one day definitely includes any hedgehogs going to other individuals.  That cuts down on gas and our time away from the farm to and from the airport.  Our round trip to the airline is five hours.  We will not ship hedgehogs via airline to customers within four hours of driving time to our farm. Booking Flights Booking flights can be quite a challenge due to the time spent on the phone with the airlines and then relaying all...

What Critter Connection Has To Offer

Experience I am a professional animal lover and breeder. I love and enjoy animals and I have chosen to make this my livelihood. My knowledge and experience with hedgehogs and other animals has been gained through years as breeding experience as well as through formal education. Some hedgehog breeders are hobby breeders and simply breed for the love of their hobby. There are other breeders who breed only as a means to the end and do not enjoy the customer education or quality care aspect of their job. It is important to me to maintain a balance of family, our customers, and other aspects of the farm. I am so blessed by my family and team members who allow my career and farm life possible. Unique Buying Experience at Our Learning Center Our customers have driven and flown from across the country for our unique buying experience. We will sit down together on the floor and play with and handle several animals. We firmly believe that hedgehog handling is best learned by experience and practice. It is not easily learnt by reading, watching a video, or by verbal instruction. Certainly these options are valuable when shipping is the only option. A good comparison to handling hedgehogs is learning to knit. You first have to have the basic concept of how to hold the needles, where to put the thread and how to make a...

Shipping and Delivery View our Shipping Policies Health Guarantee for Congenital Defects Our standard health guarantee is one year for anything congenital and for cancer for our Premier Plan pet babies. We do our very best to produce healthy animals but occasionally an undetected birth defect may become life threatening. Should a pet hedgehog die from a congenital defect prior to the one-year purchase date we will replace the hedgehog (excluding shipping) at zero cost to the original buyer. A veterinary statement confirming cancer or congenital defects is required. All veterinary expenses are the responsibility of the hedgehog owner. Deposit Agreement The purpose of a deposit is to commit to purchasing an animal and is therefore non-refundable if the buyer fails to follow through on their commitment. The deposit amount is $25.00 and is subtracted from the total price of the hedgehog. Payments can be made in person with cash, online via Paypal (credit card or Paypal account) or by mail with a money order. We do NOT accept checks for deposit payments. A deposit is required to be put on a waiting list for a particular color or gender. Discount & Premier Plans

Introduction Millermeade Farms has been selectively breeding hedgehogs since early 1997. We strive to produce the best quality hedgehogs that are possible. We do our best to accurately represent our animals. Each animal has been handled and observed for anything that might jeopardize its health in the future. We encourage all customers to carefully observe their pet before taking it home and express any and all concerns. Both our Premier Plan and our Discount Plan babies are competitively priced with breeders of similar knowledge, experience, and quality. We encourage you to compare us to other breeders listed at www.hedgehogcentral.com or www.hedgehogworld.com. One might be able to find cheaper babies elsewhere but we are confident that our prices are not only fair, but a great value when one considers the before and after sale support we give our customers. We offer our unique care and handling seminar to all of our customers that is included in the price of our animals. Premier Plan Our Premier Plan is our most popular plan for purchasing pet hedgehogs due to the additional services and features this plan offers. All hedgehogs that will be used for breeding stock should be purchased through this plan. Millermeade Farms firmly believes that not every pet hedgehog is ideal or best suited for breeding stock quality. Our breeding stock is carefully chosen based on: pedigree and background health of parents reproductive history of...

Cost and Payments

Costs to Expect Food:  The minimum food that we suggest purchasing with your hedgehog is currently $13.00. This food should be enough to last two months if not longer. Refer to our Diet Recommendations guide for reasons why we feel keeping the hedgehog on the same diet for at least the first month is important. Should you decide not to purchase the food we will have you sign a waiver stating that you acknowledge and are accepting the risks associated with not following our suggestions. Cages and/or supplies:  We have worked very hard to have quality products available at affordable prices. These products are arranged in our Hedgehog Shopping Guide. Our package deals offer the best values but each item can be purchased individually. Sales Tax for all retail sales within Ohio is 7.25% and is collected through our Williams County Vendors License. We certainly appreciate your business. We offer cash discounts because you save us money by not using a credit card. We also offer an additional cage package discount off the price of the animal. We appreciate you supporting us by buying your supplies from us. Terms of Payment Your $25 deposit made on line is deducted from your final price. We prefer cash payment with a $5 cash discount. We can accept VISA/MC. We are sorry, but we cannot accept personal checks. We do not offer payment plans. We accept full...

Farm Beginnings

Dec 16, 2013 by

Gail My name is Gail Miller and I am the owner of Millermeade Farm’s “Critter Connection”. My first introduction to the animal business began in 1984, when I was old enough to join 4-H. My father and I started raising New Zealand White rabbits together for meat and for show. We maintained the rabbit business together through my college years. My years in 4-H and the time spent raising rabbits with my father were priceless learning experiences that gave me an excellent foundation for raising animals and running a business. I had the privilege of working with my dad raising hedgehogs at “Hedgehog Headquarters” from 2002-2006. Millermeade Farms The original Millermeade Farms was a 200- acre farm owned by my grandfather in the early 1930’s. Millermeade means “Miller’s Meadows”. In 1995 my grandfather gave me two acres of the original Millermeade Farms to build a new building for an established rabbitry that I purchased in my senior year of college. Since I was the 5th generation to own the property, I kept the name Millermeade Farms for my new business. Critter Connection In 1997, I moved to northwest Ohio. I was given a trio of hedgehogs for my birthday to compensate for leaving my new rabbit building behind and thus Millermeade Farm’s “Critter Connection” was established. I fell instantly in love with the hedgehogs and my interest in exotic animals was born. I started attending Exotic Animal and...

Appointments At The Shop

Dec 3, 2013 by

Regular Appointment Times We understand many of our customers travel several hours to come to the shop and we’re honored for you to make the drive. Our average customer travels three hours to purchase their pet, so we do our best to accommodate travelers.  Saturdays are typically our busiest day but we can almost always accommodate everyone. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are our most popular weekdays.  We set aside Tuesday and Thursday for errands.  We are willing to make exceptions for customers who have time restrains. Weekday appointments are typically scheduled for 12:00PM.  We do have some flexibility with appointment times, but both  after school and evening appointments are extremely challenging. Saturday appointments are scheduled from 10:00AM to 2:00 PM at two hour intervals.  Saturday appointment times may change according to sport and activity schedules for the children.  Gail does her best to keep appointment times as consistent as possible to eliminate confusion. Bribery works if no other appointment times are an option! For weekday appointments after 2PM, evening and Sunday appointments there is an extra $30 so we can get carry out food for the family.  The kids don’t mind mommy working during their time if special food is involved!  I don’t mind if I don’t have to cook!!  The bribery must be paid prior to a visit because we alter our family time for special appointments.  Unfortunately, we’ve had people fail to follow through...

Christmas FAQ

Nov 18, 2013 by

Decide When You Want to Come Christmas is our busiest time of year and we have limited availability so the earlier you reserve a baby the more likely we are going to be able to meet your requests. We do NOT recommend hedgehogs as surprise gifts (see below) so decide if you want to make your appointment BEFORE Christmas or AFTER Christmas. Making Your Deposit Use our Make A Deposit link on our website to place a $25 deposit.  The last button says “Other” and you will be able to fill in your information.  Feel free to send a follow up email if you feel we need more clarification.  We will also verify your information with you. Please refer to our Deposit Agreement and Deposit Refunds information, before placing your deposit. Matching Babies to Customers Ideally babies are six to eight weeks old before they go to new homes.  We wait to make assignments until we know the babies are going to be ready to go at the desired appointment time.  For example, someone coming after Christmas is likely to be assigned a younger baby than someone who has an appointment before Christmas.  Babies grow at their own rate so there may be some variation. We will do our very best to make matches and the more simple the request the easier we can make a match.  For example, a request for a normal...

At Home FAQ

Care When should I take him to the vet? We recommend a well pet visit within the first month of coming home. If you are having any transitional stress issues we recommend as soon as you notice a problem. Check our Facebook page for quick answers but feel free to email us and put URGENT in the header so we know to answer your email first. How can I choose a veterinarian? These are some simple questions that will save you time and prevent surprises at your first visit. Do you treat hedgehogs? How much is a well pet visit? What do you do at a well pet visit? *We don’t believe anesthesia is necessary for a friendly hedgehog but if it doesn’t allow your veterinarian to easily exam your hedgie it may be necessary. We don’t feel a fecal exam is necessary if your hedgehog has normal, formed stool. How much is an emergency pet visit? How much is a mite treatment and what do you use? This can range from $18 to $200. We feel Revolution is the safest treatment available. Many veterinarians carry it in stock and it is relatively inexpensive. Your treatment should be less than $40. How much is a necropsy report? Losing a pet is never easy but finding out the cause of death can give important information about our herd and it can help prevent future hedgehog...

On The Road FAQ

Nov 12, 2013 by

Should I put down a deposit on one on the site and pick it up On the Road? You will need to decide if you want to purchase from the babies listed on the site or the “Pick from Three” (PFT).  Most of our customers pick from babies listed on the site.  We suggest putting your deposit on your favorite. When you come you are welcome to meet and handle any other available babies. If you like another one better, you can choose that one. Reserving your favorite assures that you can have first opportunity to purchase that hedgie. Our PFT babies are discounted because they are the hardest to place in new homes.  They might be a tad older than other babies, albino, more shy, or going through the quailing process and not as social.  Babies listed online might move to the PFT option but that is only if they are having trouble being placed through our regular program.   We don’t want you to think the PFT babies won’t make good pets but they will take more work, which is why they are discounted. Will You Have Products and Cage Sets? If you are interested in supplies, cage kits, food, check out our Products and contact us before we leave so we will know what items to bring. One thing you’ll want to do is to check out the dimensions on our Cages link.  We find...

Health Care FAQ

Nov 11, 2013 by

Do hedgehogs require vet visits? We suggest a well pet visit two to four weeks after taking your hedgehog home and annual well put check ups. We suggest calling local veterinarians to find out: Do they treat hedgehogs? How much is a well pet visit? ($25-60) How much is an emergency visit? (Traditionally more than a well pet visit) How much is a mite treatment ($25-$200). Hedgehogs can be treated relatively inexpensive with Revolution combined with simple things you can do at home. Not all vets are aware of these treatments. How much is a necropsy? (Necessary to fulfill our health guarantee. ($0-$300) Some vets will do this for free. Hedgehogs need immediate attention when hedgehogs are ill or have an accident.  It is extremely important to know your veterinarian and to have a veterinary care plan. Do hedgehogs require vet visits and shots? No. There is no need for shots or other treatments such as routine spaying or neutering. What are the most common health problems? The most common accidents are climbing and falling injuries. The most common need for veterinary treatment is for mites (about as common as cats and fleas). The most common cause of death is...

About Our Babies FAQ

Nov 11, 2013 by

How often do you have babies? We babies born every week so we have new babies that are ready to go each week. How old are the babies when they are ready to go? Almost all of our babies are ready to go by six weeks of age. We always make sure babies are eating and drinking well on their own and are an appropriate size before letting them leave. We try to have babies placed in new homes by the time they are 12 weeks old.  There are times when babies have a lengthy quilling stage and are friendlier after the bulk of their quilling is complete.  These hedgehogs may be older than 12 weeks.  As always, you will have a choice of hedgehogs when you come. There is a hedgehog that I am interested in, but what if I don’t bond with that one? Can I put my favorite on hold and see how we react to each other? Or should I just come and see the different hedgehogs that you have available and then pick one? We suggest putting your deposit on your favorite. When you come you are welcome to meet and handle any other available babies. If you like another one better, you can choose that one. Reserving your favorite assures that you are not disappointed when you...

Deposits and Visits

I am ready to purchase my hedgehog. What’s next? The first step is to choose an available hedgehog and make an appointment to meet him/her. We are open Monday through Saturday. A $25.00 deposit reserves your favorite and an appointment time for you to come to our shop. Our Available Babies and our Products page have a list of all the things we sell to get you off to a great start with your pet! How long should I plan on being at our appointment? This will depend on several factors. First, how much time you spend preparing for your hedgehog and how well you understand your hedgehog’s needs. Sometimes this part is very quick but other times this part can last 45 minutes depending on the amount of questions. We believe the best time to answer questions is BEFORE you take your hedgehog home. Once you are introduced to your hedgehog, this could also take 45 minutes if you want to look at several hedgehogs and choose your favorite by learning different personalities. At this time we will also spend a great deal of time helping you feel confident handling this unique pet. Finally, the check out process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a half hour or more depending on how long it takes you to make decisions and if there are other people making the same decisions at the same time. We suggest NOT...

Purchasing Options FAQ

Nov 11, 2013 by

Once I place my deposit how will I know you received it? You’ll know two different ways. You should receive an automatic response from Paypal and you should receive an automatic response from us. If you get one from Paypal and not from us, be sure to check your Spam folder. Your automatic response will have pick up instructions, a note about directions, as well as tips to make your visit go more smoothly. Do the hedgehogs come with health papers and is there a health guarantee? We are USDA licensed and one of the requirements is to have routine visits by our veterinarian. We can provide heath papers from our veterinarian for an additional $60.00. Our health guarantee includes: A one-year guarantee for anything congenital. A one-year guarantee for cancer. A two-year guarantee for Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome. A two-year guarantee for nutritional deficiencies provided you are following our diet recommendations. A necropsy report is necessary to fulfill the health guarantee is it will provide valuable information for our breeding program. I am still confused on what option to choose. How do I know what is the best option for me. If you do not put down $10 with one of the options, you are taking a risk that we are here. I run errands and all kinds of things and I am the only one who takes care of the appointments. We require...

What is a Pedigree?

Oct 23, 2013 by

A pedigree is a simple record of three generations of an animals heritage. Animals with unknown origin may be included on a pedigree and as future records are maintained for an animal’s offspring, a full pedigree will eventually be recorded. At Millermeade Farm’s Critter Connection, we keep pedigrees on every animal, but not all animals may have a full pedigree if some of the animals came from other breeders. A pedigree of an animal in itself does not guarantee the quality of that particular animal.  Quality animals may not have a pedigree and poor quality animals may have a pedigree.  A pedigree is simply the presence or absence of a piece of paper (or online record) of the animal’s lineage. A pedigree is a valuable asset allows one to track breeding stock and is essential in all good breeding...

Selecting A Hedgehog

Jun 17, 2013 by

Online and Advance Picture Listing Many hedgehog owners and potential owners enjoy looking at pictures of available babies. We do our very best to take pictures that accurately represent our animals. We offer the opportunity to purchase specific babies by listing babies online with pictures. We do our best to update pictures that are more than three weeks old. You may notice color markings on the hedgehog in the online pictures. This is a way that we mark our babies so we can tell them apart since many babies look identical or very similar. Our Premier Plan babies are given names and listed online. Names can be changed of course, but we name them because they are animals that are staying in our record keeping system. Only limited numbers of Discount Plan babies are listed with actual pictures. Pictures require a considerable amount of time to post online. Discount Plan babies are less expensive in part because they do not have all the advantages of the Premier Plan. Selection at Pick-Up Visit  Some of our customers prefer to handle several babies and to choose the baby that they like the best. This type of customer is one that is not concerned about color as much as personality and how the hedgehog responds to being handled by an individual. We will do our best to provide as many choices as possible for selection without an advance reservation. Please keep in mind that...
