Appointments At The Shop

Regular Appointment Times We understand many of our customers travel several hours to come to the shop and we’re honored for you to make the drive. Our average customer travels three hours to purchase their pet, so we do our best to accommodate travelers.  Saturdays are typically our busiest day but we can almost always accommodate everyone. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are our most popular weekdays.  We set aside Tuesday and Thursday for errands.  We are willing to make exceptions for customers who have time restrains. Weekday appointments are typically scheduled for 12:00PM.  We do have some flexibility with appointment times, but both  after school and evening appointments are extremely challenging. Saturday appointments are scheduled from 10:00AM to 2:00 PM at two hour intervals.  Saturday appointment times may change according to sport and activity schedules for the children.  Gail does her best to keep appointment times as consistent as possible to eliminate confusion. Bribery works if no other appointment times are an option! For weekday appointments after 2PM, evening and Sunday appointments there is an extra $30 so we can get carry out food for the family.  The kids don’t mind mommy working during their time if special food is involved!  I don’t mind if I don’t have to cook!!  The bribery must be paid prior to a visit because we alter our family time for special appointments.  Unfortunately, we’ve had people fail to follow through...

Availability

General Information New hedgehog babies are born at Millermeade Farms every week and other babies are available for purchase every week. We can almost always accommodate general baby requests with at least two weeks notice. Specific color requests are much harder to guarantee availability as it is often a “surprise” what colors will be produced. Our Premium Plan babies are the first available babies listed. These babies can be reserved or chosen up to several weeks before they are ready to go to their new homes. Hedgehogs may be moved to the Discount Plan for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: Minor physical imperfection A hedgehog that is eight weeks of age and has not sold through our Premium Plan A hedgehog that is a little more shy or nervous than we like to see in our Premium Plan. Color Requests We personally enjoy having a variety of colors in our herd and it has been challenging and fun for us to produce various colors. We do not however, enjoy trying to determine the true name of each color and trying to describe that color to others. One important fact to remember when choosing a color is that babies may change their color as they mature. This is especially true with the snowflake pattern and white varieties. Hedgehog Central at www.hedgehogcentral.com has an amazing color guide. We are happy to accommodate broad requests such as standard or...

Grouchy Hedgehogs

Are Hedgehogs Truly Grouchy or Are They Simply Misunderstood? Understanding Hedgehog Behavior “I’d rather be alone.” One of the biggest misconceptions about the hedgehog is that this naturally shy animal is “grumpy” or “grouchy”. The reality is hedgehogs are simply fearful of changes in their environment (i.e.: Being handled by a new person). “I heard that!” Hedgehogs have poor eyesight, but heightened senses of hearing, motion detection, and even emotion detection. This makes them very sensitive to changes in their environment, and changes in your approach and mood.  The way in which hedgehogs are approached and handled can determine their reaction. “Trust takes time.” You must to prove yourself trustworthy before a hedgehog can completely relax and enjoy being in your company. To do this, you must be persistent, patient, and relaxed. If your pet senses you are scared to handle it, then it will most likely react defensively. “Take a step back, please.” When hedgehogs are nervous or scared they will ball up, becoming a handful of prickly quills. This natural defensive mechanism is not a sign of aggression. They are simply protecting themselves from the unknown. “I don’t feel so good.” Hedgehogs with health issues may be less responsive to handling due to pain or discomfort, and may prefer to be left alone. Quilling is an example of a normal process that can be very uncomfortable for a hedgehog and can impact...
